Ellesmere's The Mere and the old Cambrian Railway station

Wednesday, 9 May 2018

Today we had a walk round Ellesmere which has grown on us. We did the 1.5mile walk which takes in the town, wharf but also The Mere which is very scenic. I also went on a mission to find the rather grand Cambrian Railway station which was closed in 1965 and is now part of a major redevelopment site of over 4 acres. It was built in 1863 and has survived closed for half of its active life - a miracle in itself.
To quote the tourist guides The Meres were created by the retreating Ice Age and it's associated melt waters approx 10,000 years ago. This is a view along The Promenade of The Mere just off it is Moscow Island. This has nesting herons on it that can be seen via live feeds in the Boathouse Cafe which also does good coffee.

The front view of Ellesmere station I eventually found, it wasn't in Station Road but next to Station Cottage.

Walking round to the platform side really did show how much of it still survives after 53 years since closing.

Not sure what I can say about this name!
