Trip down the Montgomery Canal

Friday, 18 May 2018

Again we have been in an EE black hole whilst we have been down the Montgomery Canal from Frankton Junction. We booked a passage down on Wednesday 16 and came back up today. The locks are only open between 12 and 2 pm each day. It's only navigable for 7 miles to just past Maesbury Marsh where there is a turning point at Gronwen Wharf. The canal is in water for  about another half mile to bridge 84. The next section is being restored to bridge 85. Approximately 2.5miles to go before it joins the next section of restored and watered canal after Pant. After our walk along the canal we had coffee in The Canal Central Cafe and very good it was too.

There is a lot of work being done on the off side as you go through the 3 Aston Locks. It's an EU and Lottery funded project for the Aston Reserves Habitat Creation which seems to be one of the reasons why the canal has been restored.

The scenery the canal goes through is lovely and remote but there are only a few moorings available so in some respects its a bit like our trip down the Basingstoke Canal a few years back.

We are now on our way into Llangollen and tonight we are again moored in a lovely spot just before we get to Chirk just past the 2 New Marton Locks.

Apologies as the pictures are not in any order tonight.

Saw this on a private mooring perhaps a way to generate some cash

Looking up the staircase locks at Frankton

When we went down there were 4 boats but coming up there were 11

We had just seen a boat called bits and bobs
